The Jabberwock

Beware the Jabberwock, my son!  
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun

I hesitated a lot when it was time to decide what figure I would enter in the villains bonus round of the Analogue painting Challenge. After all, with me painting an Oldhammer Chaos army the choices were plentiful! In the end I went with the Jabberwock for two reasons: it's a really cool figure and I figured there was no way someone else would submit one! 

The Jabberwock was always one of my favourite Chaos monster. I mean, just the name "Jabberwock" is awesome and for some strange reason fits perfectly with the beast's appearance. I remember seeing a picture of one in the Warhammer 3rd edition bestiary and thinking I needed one of those! Just...so...bizarre! 

The figure I used was released in the early 80s, 1982 I believe, by Ral Partha, and was sculpted by Tom Meier. While not a Citadel figure per se, it was sold in Europe by Citadel under license. I bought that figure, actually sold in the Citadel packaging, in the late eighties, in a now long defunct hobby shop "bargain bin". I undercoated it, lost interest and the poor fellow spent more than 20 years in the bottom of my lead box. The figure has aged remarkably well I find, and it is still today imho the best looking Jabberwock available on the market. Few sculpts of the Jabberwock have been made in 28mm; one by Ral Partha, one by Citadel and a recent one from Reaper.

The great thing with this creature is that you can truly let your imagination run wild as there is no "accepted" reference, and most pics are black & white. I went mostly with a striking green to match the colour scheme I intend to give to my chaos force.
He's one of many weird monsters I would like to paint and he will more than likely have a place of honour among my Chaos monsters, as I really like him.

 

 

 

This weird creation of chaos gives me 70 pts in the contest (extra points for the bonus round).

Bring out your lights! (another challenge!)

Robert, our esteemed leader over at La Bricole, has recently started a new Napoleonic painting challenge. The theme this time is light infantry or cavalry of any description, in any size and scale and in any numbers from vignette to brigades. 

This competition is about quality, not quantity, so I figure there's nothing stopping me from participating in both the Analogue challenge and the La Bricole challenge.I have an idea of what I want to do, but I'm still planning the last details. Its going to be a challenge to pull it off in time, but I'll do my best.

There is still time to participate in the challenge, and I encourage all Napoleonic painters to join our small but very friendly (and ever expanding) forum.

Champions!!

What a fantastic season, congrats to Coach Dantonio and the whole team.

A bunch of 3-star players on an unranked preseason team does not often become the best defense in the country and the 4th ranked team heading into its most cherished bowl game. This team is for real, and they proved it yesterday by smacking some Buckeyes.

And now, for the first time since 1988, on to the Granddaddy of Them All, the Rose Bowl.

Winter is coming...

And you all know what that means, right?

Yes, the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is back. I received an email a few days ago from Curt to inquire about my interest in taking the challenge once more, and I gladly accepted.This year I want to be a bit more ready with my stuff so the Trolls mentioned in my last post will wait a little while I clean and prime as many things as possible in the coming weeks!  

The Challenge is similar in format to last year, however with a few twist, first and foremost the inclusion of Sci-Fi and Fantasy figures. There is also themes per week, those interested can read all about it on Curt's blog 

The inclusion of fantasy miniatures is great news for me, as it means I'll be able to include my Oldhammer project in the contest. But while I intend to focus on my fantasy project, I also want to use the opportunity to work a little on my Canaanites and Napoleonics.

After some difficult thinking, I've decided on this target as well as my (tentative) plan.  So my magic number is...590 pts. It is more than I did last year (405 pts), but less than last year's target number (710 pts). A middle ground number, really.

Here's the rundown, which may be changed without prior notice at any time :

• 15 Chaos Warriors (15x5) : 75 pts
• 10 Chaos Warriors (10x5) : 50
• 15 Chaos Dwarfs (15x5) : 75 pts
• 4 Trolls (15x4) : 60 pts
• 1 Jabberwock (15) : 15 pts
• 20 Beastmen (20x5) : 100 pts
• 16 Canaanite archers (16x5) : 80 pts
• 1 Canaanite Prince on Chariot : 35 pts
• Austrian 6pdr battery (4 guns + 12 crew) (4x10+12x5) : 100 pts
• 1 "28mm figure that is inspired by a Sam Peckinpah film"* : 5 pts

 A nice mixture of stuff to keep me entertained all winter! I intend to try to participate in some of the bonus rounds, at least the villains and vehicles if I can manage it.
